Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Troupe was formed in Dec 1989. It began as an avocational troupe offering dance courses and performance opportunities for enthusiasts. Its pioneer and also current Artistic Director is Madam Lim Moi Kim. Under the leadership of Madam Lim and her team of instructors; and support from the Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan and the National Arts Council, the Dance Troupe has grown and developed into a professional Chinese Dance group and charity Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan Dance Theatre. In July 2014, SHHKDT is officially registered as Charity under the Charities Act.
Over the years, the SHHKDT has performed locally, regionally and in the international arena. Their biennial dance performance featuring many original works is well attended and often received positive reviews. The Troupe has also performed dance festivals in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Many of its choreographed works by its young choreographers had also received commendations and awards.
The Dance Theatre mantra has always been keeping heritage, strengthen traditions and synergize new elements. This has served to maintain the professional standards of the Troupe and helped it achieve artistic excellence.
